WINNING THE MENTAL GAME!
Winners in any activity have similar traits, lets try and save time trying to identify and learn these skills by copying from those who have done it already.
Developing the Mind of a Champion
Wining is not by chance, by luck, by natural talent…..it’s a habit and a planned one at that!
~ Focus
~ Abstract Thinking
~ Emotional Stability
~ Dominance
~ Tough-minded
~ Confident
~ Self-sufficient
~ Optimal Arousal
These are the traits sport-psychologist have identified and develop in their clients.
Focus – Its amazing how many people mentally switch off, on public transport, at work, in a party (you know him the guy/girl who can’t keep focus on what your saying because he/she thinks someone else is more interesting, really and truly ‘he/she’s the boring one!’).
Abstract thinking – to analytically reason, problem solve, learn and adapt intellectually.
Emotional Stability – Regardless of life’s ups and downs, we are able to perform. People in healthy relationships are usually more stable (that guy/girl in the party again, trying to be the centre of the party, just to get your attention).
Dominance – “Those who say that it’s not the winning, but the taking part, are destined to be losers” – Linford Christie (former Olympic and world champion sprinter). Yes there’s an air of arrogance/ aggression in this statement, because there has to be, especially to be an Olympic Champion.
Tough-Minded – courtesy, thoughtfulness, compassion vs. Self-centred, Indifferent, Unmoved by the irrational and superficial needs of the people around. Who do you think is going to win, you flower kissing, tree hugging, Wimp!
Confident – Having that healthy, secure state of mind through all the little things in life, and its all little things (marriage, divorce, bankruptcy, selling those shares at the wrong time) it’s all little in the long run!
Self-sufficient – When a person is out there competing, who’s going to run out there and grab their hand to say do it this way!
Optimal Arousal – ‘in the ZONE’. What are the things that switch you into WINNING MODE!
If there are any missing parts of your ‘Hierarchy of needs’ you will know it in competition……….
