Opportunity & Initiative in Aikido Training

2014-01-08 19.59.17Aikido, indeed all martial arts training use physical training methods, as many as there are people training. Each individual’s needs and ability to satisfy those needs depend on circumstances, resources, knowledge, goals etc.

There are people who go down to the gym and strength train for martial arts, aiming to be the strongest at doing the current favourite technique out and about at the time. Fair play!

“You win battles by knowing the enemy’s timing, and using a timing which the enemy does not expect…” – Miyamoto Musashi

As the human body has many tools available to the initiated, we have to consider that if training is only about being stronger than everyone you are training with; there are things missing. If it’s all about strength, then someone explain to me why there isn’t a World Champion sprinter or gymnast who looks like a Champion Bodybuilder.

Opportunity – a time or set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something. “Chance, opening, golden opportunity, in the moment”
Initiative – the power or opportunity to act or take charge/ act, before others do. The ability to assess and initiate things independently. “use your initiative, imagination, and common sense”
